Waterproof Case Warranties Compared

Waterproof Case Warranties Compared

7th February 2025

We offer a range of injection-moulded waterproof cases from leading manufacturers. A common question from our customers is how warranties compare between brands. We only stock premium brands, so while all manufacturers below provide solid warranty coverage, differences exist in terms of duration and what is covered. This article outlines those differences.

Quick Summary

Here are the basic lengths of each warranty:

Brand Warranty from Manufacturer
Peli (Classic/Protector) Limited Lifetime Warranty
Peli Storm Limited Lifetime Warranty
Peli Air Limited Lifetime Warranty
Vault by Peli 3 Year Limited Warranty
Peli Roto Moulded 1 Year Limited Warranty
Nanuk Limited Lifetime Warranty
SKB Limited Lifetime Warranty
HPRC 2 Year Limited Warranty
MAX Lifetime Limited Warranty
B&W 30 Year Limited Warranty
Explorer Forever Warranty

We encourage customers to familiarise themselves with specific limitations of the warranties outlined below and on the manufacturer's websites.

If Your Case Has Failed

If you need to claim under the manufacturer's warranty the best way to proceed depends on who you purchased from. See the instructions below...

For Customers Who Purchased from Us

If you bought your case from us, please contact us first (email: sales@thecaseshop.co.uk). We will liaise with the manufacturer on your behalf to ensure the best possible resolution.

While your warranty is with the manufacturer, and limited by their terms and procedures, we are sometimes able to achieve an improved result for our customers.

For example, with the manufacturer’s authorisation we are sometimes able to replace your case from stock in our UK warehouse, rather than you having to wait for a replacement from the manufacturer abroad. The manufacturer then replaces our stock with their next delivery to us.

We can also sometimes offer you the option to send the faulty item to us at our UK warehouse, rather than to the manufacturer abroad.

To assist with your claim, please provide:

  • Photos of the entire case.
  • Close-up images of any damaged areas.
  • Receipt from the original order you placed with us.

What we can do will depend on the manufacturer’s policies and decisions and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. (No pun intended!).

For Customers Who Purchased Elsewhere

If you bought your case from another retailer, please contact them directly, or reach out to the manufacturer.

Things to Consider

When thinking about the warranties there is more to consider than the length. Here is a summary of the most important factors to consider...

Common Warranty Exclusions

Many of the warranties have exclusions, which are listed in their warranty texts below. Briefly though, these are some of the common exclusions:

  • Coverage is for the case only – The warranties do not cover contents stored inside, nor do they cover any consequential damages. Manufacturer liability is typically limited to the original purchase price in any event.
  • Damage from misuse, neglect, or modifications – Any alterations or abuse of the product will likely void the warranty.
  • Accessories have shorter warranties – Foam padding, dividers, and similar accessories generally have a much shorter warranty than the case itself.
  • Manufacturer decides the resolution – The manufacturer may elect to repair, replace or refund the item, with the manufacturer having the final choice between those solutions, not the customer.
  • Discontinued models – If the product is no longer in production, the manufacturer may elect to replace it with a similar one.
  • Prompt reporting required – Most manufacturers require you to report any defects or failures as soon as possible, sometimes they have specific deadlines.
  • Normal wear and tear is excluded – General wear over time is not covered. Although, in reality, manufacturers do sometimes choose to supply replacements or spare parts in this situation as a goodwill gesture.

Other Important Considerations

  • Proof of purchase – You will likely need to provide a receipt to make a warranty claim, as most warranties apply only to the original purchaser.
  • Non-transferable warranties – Warranties typically do not extend to second-hand owners or those who acquire the case through means other than purchase (e.g., inheritance, theft, salvage from the sea!).
  • Air Travel Damage – From experience, in the case of damage during air travel you will be expected to claim from the airline instead of the manufacturer. Having said this though, these cases do stand up to air travel MUCH better than typical hard suitcases, so damage is rare.
  • Cosmetic damage is not covered – Scratches and minor aesthetic issues are not included in warranty coverage.
  • Shipping costs may apply – Some manufacturers require customers to cover return shipping costs for warranty claims.
  • Replaceable parts – If an easily replaceable part (e.g., a handle) fails, the manufacturer may send you the part instead of replacing the whole case. They generally will not fit the part themselves.
  • Out-of-warranty part replacement – Even if a broken part is not covered, manufacturers usually sell spare parts separately.
  • The benefit of good photography – The manufacturers will sometimes want to see the case before agreeing to a warranty claim. Sending good, well-lit, in-focus photography of the whole case, and close-ups of any problem areas can significantly speed up a claim – and sometimes result in it being solved on terms more agreeable to you. For example, the manufacturer may send spare parts without you having to send the case to them for in-person inspection or may allow you to send a broken case to us (if you are our customer) for replacement rather than the manufacturer’s offices in USA/Canada/Italy/Germany etc.

  • free repair of the product or
  • free exchange of the product for an item of the same value (or a follow-up model where the original product is no longer available).

The warranty promise applies exclusively to the functional state of the Warranty Product. Follow-up costs, including any consequential damage or assembly costs, are not part of the warranty and will not be reimbursed.

The warranty promise applies exclusively to the synthetic and metal parts of the product.

B&W International GmbH’s warranty applies within the area of the European Union. German law shall apply for all legal disputes in connection with this Agreement.

The warranty period is calculated from the date of the invoice/purchase receipt.

A warranty claim requires that B&W International GmbH are able to review the warranty case within the warranty period after having received the Warranty Product. The Warranty Product should be sent in with a copy of the invoice/purchase receipt and an as accurate as possible description of the defect. Warranty claims cannot be made for damages to the Warranty Product through:

  • improper or incorrect use
  • disregard of any safety precautions
  • disregard of operating instructions
  • Excessive use of violence (e.g. blow, impact, fall) which exceeds the test criteria according to the certified standards (DEF-STAN and ATA300); the test criteria can be found in the test reports published on our website: DEF_STAN & ATA-300.

In particular, damage caused by falls and damage following on from that, e.g. failing impermeability due to a previous fall, are excluded from the warranty.

Attempts at repair or repairs carried out by a non-authorised workshop or by non-authorised personnel are also excluded from the warranty.

Note:
Your rights under current law, such as your rights against the vendor under the purchase agreement (e.g. legal liability for material defects) remain unaffected by this warranty. This warranty applies in addition to the applicable warranty and liability regulations and does not restrict the rights of consumers against vendors or other mandatory rights or inalienable rights according to the law on general terms and conditions of business.

Therefore, should the purchased product be faulty you can, in line with the vendor’s legal liability for material defects, approach the vendor regardless of whether a warranty case applies or a claim is made under the warranty.

Summary

All the brands mentioned offer excellent warranties. However, as you will understand from reading the above they do vary in length and exclusions. If you need advice please feel free to contact us and the relevant manufacturers directly.

Remember that in terms of warranty, purchasing your case from The Case Shop often has big benefits. For example, with the manufacturer's permission, we are often able to replace faulty items from our UK based stock rather than you having to wait for a replacement to arrive from the manufacturer in the USA/Canada/Germany/Italy etc. This is a special strength for us as we carry a large range of cases in stock and can be more flexible in our procedures than the non-specialist retailers who are less likely to be able to act as an intermediary with the manufacturer.

You can purchase your new waterproof case in our shop here.

Please note:

  • *Roto moulded cases are not injection moulded. Peli’s roto moulded cases are included here for completeness.
  • This text is written as a rough guide to begin research on this topic only – not legal advice. Tim Jones Limited (trading as The Case Shop) cannot be held responsible for errors, omissions, inaccuracies or the performance of the various companies in satisfying their warranty and guarantee obligations.
  • Please note manufacturer warranty terms may have changed since the writing of this article. Please double check manufacturer websites if you are basing your purchase decision on warranty terms to avoid disappointment.
  • We have used the terms ‘warranty’ and ‘guarantee’ interchangeably without intending any difference in meaning. Again, this isn’t legal advice.
  • This text is aimed mainly at readers in the United Kingdom, we have excluded text from warranties that relates to other countries. It mostly holds true for the those in other countries but there may be changes. Laws in other countries may grant extra rights, or exclude rights. In particular, lifetime warranties are not permitted in some jurisdictions.
  • The warranties mentioned above often mention the o-ring, this is the rubber seal around the opening that prevents water ingress. Checking if this is undamaged is a great idea before exposing the case to water. If it is damaged it can almost always be replaced either under warranty or by purchasing the spare part to do this.
